Every heating, ventilation and air conditioning system can be expected to make noise occasionally. But when the noises are too frequent, loud or annoying, your system may be overdue for a checkup. When you hear banging, popping or high-pitched ringing sounds, something is probably wrong with your HVAC system.
Air Flow Obstruction
A common cause of irritating sounds from your vents is a problem with air flow. This may be caused by dirty or clogged blower wheels or loose or closed duct dampers and supply vents. These problems will cause the system to have to work harder to meet the selected setting, which makes it run much more noisily. Excess debris can cause similar noises for the same reason. These problems can usually be remedied by cleaning the ducts.
Closed Duct Dampers
A common cause of excessively noisy HVAC systems is that too many duct dampers are closed. Check for this by opening one at a time and listening for changes in the sounds your system makes. This may solve the problem by relieving air pressure. Be sure to repair any loose or ill-fitting dampers as well as dampers that no longer open and shut properly. If you cannot arrange your damper settings in a way that is conducive to comfort and quiet, there may be a more fundamental problem with your system.
Fluctuating Temperatures
Rapid changes in temperature, common in spring and fall, can cause your HVAC system to seem to be acting erratically. This is not necessarily a sign of malfunctioning, but it can cause strain on your system and lead to disruptive noises. Noises caused by temperature fluctuations will not usually last very long, but they can be annoying enough to spur you into action. One way to deal with this problem is to wrap the ducts with insulation. Another way is to install rubber padding or acoustic liners.
If temperature fluctuations do go on for too long, the expansion and contraction of the ducts can cause joints and fittings to become loose, which will make your ducts even more noisy. If you live in an area where rapid fluctuations in temperature carry on for more than a few days at a time, you may want to install rubber padding pre-emptively.
Perform Regular Maintenance
Most problems that lead to unwanted noise from your HVAC system can be prevented by adhering to a regular schedule of maintenance. It is a good idea to have annual service performed by a certified heating and air conditioning technician. Regular service will result in improved energy efficiency, which is sure to take some of the bite out of those winter and summer electricity bills.
